Music Class
Over the course of music history, there have been many people who are called "composers"? The term composer is a word that we hear often in a music classroom, but what is a composer? To give a simple answer, a composer is a person who writes (composes) music. A composer is a creative person who brings music to life. In today's world, a composer most likely starts writing their piece (song) by sitting behind a computer while using musical composition software and inputs. However, years ago, a composer sat with pencil and paper in hand with an instrument close by. As the composer heard a tune in his or her head, they wrote down the notes they wanted to be played, and then they went to their instrument to make sure what they wanted to do was written down correctly.
Over the many years of music history, there have been many famous composers. A composer is a person who writes music. One of my favorite pieces of music comes from a composer named Sergei Prokofiev. Many of you might not be familiar with the name Sergei Prokofiev or any of his works, but beginning today we will focus on him and one of his pieces. Please click HERE for the classics for kids website. Once you arrive at the site, please click on the play button to hear a short biography (story) of Sergei Prokofiev's life. When you are finished listening to the story, please feel free to take the short quiz at the bottom of the page. Please do not click any of the other links on the page. If you could become a famous composer, what type of music would you write? Please explain your answer in at least 3 sentences.
After you finish answering the questions, we are going to think about the next thing we will learn about. I mentioned that Sergei Prokofiev wrote one of my favorite pieces of music. Peter and the Wolf was a story Sergei Prokofiev wrote for children. He also wrote the music to go along with the story. Let's brainstorm! Without looking anywhere for the answer, what characters do you think would appear in a story that is titled, Peter and the Wolf? Are there people? Are there animals? Who (people or animals) do you think take part in this story? There are no right or wrong answers for this. Please write your ideas down and we will continue our work with Sergei Prokofiev and Peter and the Wolf next time.

Online Learning is a new experience for many of us.. Students, Teachers, and Parents and Guardians are all learning new things every day! Since this is a new style of learning for everyone involved, it is important that the students understand the importance of internet safety. Please refer to this basic list for internet safety by clicking HERE. After students read these guidelines ( or have the guidelines read to them), students should create a poster for internet safety. Students may use any type of paper that is available to them. Students should either draw themselves following the online safety guidelines or they can draw a picture that restates the rules. Please have fun with this project and really use this as an opportunity to think about safety while online.
