Music Class
In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev wrote both the story and the music for his famous composition, Peter and the Wolf. He was contacted by the Central Children's Theater in Moscow to create a piece that was intended for young audiences. This story uses instruments of the orchestra to help tell the story. Each character has their own unique "theme" that is played by various orchestral instruments. Why was this done? The answer is simple. Sergei Prokofiev used this method to introduce children to the various instruments found in the orchestra. There have been many versions of this story produced over the years. One popular version of Peter and the Wolf was a cartoon created by Walt Disney. In this version, many of the characters are given names. This was not the case in the original story. Even though there are slight differences in various versions of the story, the plot remains the same.
All of the characters are represented by an instrument of the orchestra. What is an orchestra? An orchestra is a group of instrumentalists ( musicians who play instruments) that play classical music. An orchestra usually combines instruments from the four families of musical instruments. The four instrument families are:

Brass
Percussion

The characters of the story and their instruments are as follows:
Peter - Played by a string quartet. A quartet is a group of four musicians playing at the same time.
The Bird - Played on the flute. The flute is a member of the woodwind family of instruments.
The Cat - Played on the clarinet. The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family of instruments.
The Duck - Played on the oboe. The oboe is a member of the woodwind family of instruments.
The Grandfather- Played on the bassoon. The bassoon is a member of the woodwind family of instruments.
The Wolf - Played on the French Horn. The French Horn is a member of the brass family of instruments.

Happy Earth Week! (A few days late...Earth Day was April 22nd)

When was Earth Day first celebrated?
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, in 1970. It began when the Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, suggested that April 22 be used for an environment education day. It's estimated that around 20 million people in the United States participated that first day. Many people consider this day to mark the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
Earth Day Goes World Wide
Twenty years after the first Earth Day, on April 22, 1990, the entire world joined in on the environmental activity. Around 200 million people from 141 different countries participated in some way.
In recognition of Earth day, you will be creating a sketch of the Earth being held in the hands of God. Please see the video below of the directions. A few things to remember when creating a sketch:
- Sketching is done by using a pencil
- When creating a sketch, use short, light lines in the beginning. You can darken your lines as needed after your initial sketch is finished
- Light lines allow you to erase any mistakes with ease
To begin your sketch, please watch the video in it's entirety. It is a short video, however, there are many steps that you need to follow in order to finish your sketch. Once you watch the entire video, gather your materials. You will need paper, a pencil, and an eraser. Please begin your drawing by following along with the video. Pause and replay the video as you need. Remember, your work does not need to be perfect! As a teacher, I do not ask for perfection. I ask for my students to always do their best.
